Join the lab!
Interested in exploring functional morphology and biomechanics in more detail? We have numerous opportunities for undergraduate, graduate students, and early career scientists to lead independent research related to the form and function of animals.

Following Brian O'Meara (http://brianomeara.info/opportunities.html), you are welcome to reach out to current and past lab members to learn about working in the Fins and Limbs Lab, but never tell me what was said in your conversations with them (regardless of whether it was positive or negative). This is to provide my lab members some privacy and reassurance to speak freely and honestly about their experiences.

Prospective applicants must contact the PI ([email protected]) with the following information:
- A CV with your presentations, publications, and grants or other awards (pending or otherwise),
- A summary of your research experience(s),
- A concise overview of the research that you would pursue in lab,
- A summary of your mentoring experiences(s) (or how you are prepared to mentor students, if you haven't had prior experience),
- A brief description of what you hope to gain from your post-doctoral experience and how it contributes to your career goals.
Graduate students
Note: We are not accepting graduate students.
I enjoy working with graduate students, but am focusing on mentoring research staff and undergraduate students at this time. I am still happy to serve on student committees and assist with research dissertations, though!

Undergraduate students:
There are numerous opportunities for undergraduate students to assist and / or lead research projects related to on-going work through the Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior program at UVA (https://bio.as.virginia.edu/ecology-evolution) or the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Mountain Lake Biological Station (https://mlbs.virginia.edu/reuprogram). Our team is particularly eager to recruit students with strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and an interest in learning quantitative techniques that integrate the physical and life sciences. Previous research experience is desirable but not necessary since training will be provided.
Prospective undergraduate students must email the PI ([email protected]) the following information:
Accepted students must agree to at least one semester of commitment, although preference will be given to applicants who can devote at least one year of active participation in the lab. Prospective students may need to attend lab meetings for one semester before enrolling in course credit. All lab members are expected to demonstrate progress each semester and contribute to a dynamic, diverse, and collaborative team.
